Markham Elementary School

Following a successful district-wide master plan, HY Architects recently completed a campus modernization and expansion project at Markham Elementary School. The project included the construction of a new multipurpose building and 27 classrooms, along with the update of two existing classroom buildings and the conversion of two additional buildings to house administration and the library. The modular design was utilized to minimize disruptions to the school, and the first modular building was finished during the district’s winter break.

To comply with flood-zone requirements, site re-grading was completed before the new construction, and the DSA applications were submitted in three increments to enable sitework to begin while design refinement continued. The construction was divided into seven phases due to tight funding that prevented temporary relocations and housing for students and staff. Despite these challenges, HY Architects worked closely with the construction manager and general contractor to ensure that the school remained fully operational throughout the project.

In addition, HY Architects designed an 8,000 SF multipurpose building that includes a large assembly space, food service, and a stage. To connect the building design to the community, incuse panels were created on the concrete building base surface for future ceramic tile artwork by students and the community.
