Markham Elementary School

After completion of the District-wide master plan, HY Architects was selected to design the Markham Elementary School campus modernization and expansion project. The campus modernization updated two existing classroom buildings and converted two additional buildings to house Administration and the Library. Included were 27 new modular classrooms, two integrated restroom buildings and a new 8,000 SF multipurpose building with a large assembly space, food service and a stage.

To address flood-zone requirements, site re-grading was completed prior to the new construction. By submitting the DSA applications in three increments, the sitework was able to commence while the design refinement continued for the remaining phases of the project.

Tight funding prevented temporary relocations and housing for students and staff. To overcome this challenge, the construction was divided into seven phases. Through constant collaboration with the construction manager and general contractor, an effective phasing plan ensured a fully operational school.
